After the comprehensive renovation of the Ernst Haeckel House, we are currently designing a new permanent exhibition for the four museum rooms on the first floor. In addition to the well-known facets of Ernst Haeckel and his work, the planned exhibition will also illuminate lesser-known facets and critically question his position on colonialism and his racial doctrine. References to science, art and culture will be made from very different perspectives.
The museum features two historically furnished rooms on the upper storey of the house, the study and the balcony room, which contain Ernst Haeckel’s original furniture and paintings. On the first floor, in Haeckel’s former living quarters (lounge, dining room, the terrace and children’s room), is the museum which is dedicated to the historical and critical reappraisal of his artistic and scientific works and worldview. A new permanent exhibition for the Ernst Haeckel Museum is currently in preparation.
The goal is to create a participatory exhibition in which you, the visitor, join in the discussion and contribute your thoughts to the exhibition.
As part of a collaborative project, students of Applied Media and Cultural Studies at Merseburg University of Applied SciencesExternal link, with the help of academic work by students of the History of Science at the University of Jena and researchers, developed initial ideas on how collection objects could be exhibited at the Ernst Haeckel House.
More information about the project can be found at Workshop Curating Objects.
